Redemption

Next off of my Xbox 360 (now firmly “last gen”) pile of shame is Rockstar’s critically acclaimed open world Western game Red Dead Redemption.

I’ve been wanting to play this damn game since its pre-release hype train first started rolling down the tracks. First of all, I definitely consider myself a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series and Rockstar Games in general. Second, a Western? A serious, open world Western done by a studio I like, using proven tech? Sign me up, right? Third, after its release the game got more or less lauded by critics and gamers across the board. Actually, the fact that the game (shamefully) never made it to PC is one of the few things brethren of the “PC Master Race” have to be jealous of the unwashed console masses over. So, yeah, this game has definitely been high on my list for a while now.

So, at long last…

One of my first impressions was my surprise about just how damn slowly the game takes off. Sure, the first plot point is early and suitably dramatic but after that? Molasses city. Worse yet, I felt a little bit of that old open world “err, what do I do now, and why do I give a shit about doing it?” feeling set in almost immediately. Another factor here is the engine. GTA 4’s engine (which Red Dead Redemption uses) is beautiful and impressive in many ways, but it feels seriously clunky in some others. Shooting, riding horses, hell, just walking around can feel a little awkward sometimes with getting stuck into odd looking animation loops or clipping through objects in weird ways probably the most common offenders. As I concluded with GTA 4 years ago, once you get used to the engine’s “feel” and some of its idiosyncrasies it’s just fine, good even. Besides, blowing a bandit off his horse with your revolver feels magnificent. That lead up definitely hurts the early game though.

So I wasn’t quite as impressed as I thought I’d be at first. Boo hoo! Soon though, the absolutely incredible execution of Rockstar’s world crafting started to steer my opinion back around. The rolling plains teaming with wildlife, campfires in the Mexican desert, seedy frontier towns filled with whores and bandits, and other appropriate tropes of the genre are all here and feel just great. The immersion started taking hold to a serious degree as I found myself riding my horse from location to location more appealing than the various “fast travel” options and being overly concerned with Marston’s wardrobe and preference in firearms. As I’ve mentioned here before, being able to feel deeply immersed in a game world tends to be one of the more compelling factors in whether or not I’m going to love a game and have no doubt, this is where RDR shines the brightest.

I would definitely have to say the game’s serious tone has a lot to do with this. GTA 4 was mostly a serious affair but served with a massive side of the often not-so-subtle satire the series is known for but RDR is almost entirely straight-laced. So focused in fact, that while your character is free to go on murderous rampages if you desire (apparently not too out of character given his outlaw past, though that is debatable) he has absolutely no interest in patronizing the local working girls due to being a dedicated husband. Wow, is this the same Rockstar?

I wouldn’t go as far as to say the game’s writing is anything amazing, however. I mean, the game is filled top to bottom with clichés from classic Westerns and while this mostly feels like honest tribute from fans of the genre, I feel like a few of the characters I encountered early on were walking stereotypes. This is a common trait of Westerns though, even in some of the more acclaimed modern movies, and the few characters that develop into being likeable and fairly interesting (John Marston, our protagonist, chief among them) more than make up for that. One of the bigger underlying themes of the story, the death of the “old west” as it is an allegory for the way we grow and change, is fairly well worn as well. It could have still been a damn fascinating theme if delved into a little deeper. Shame that. As an aside, this game has got me absolutely fiending to watch gritty modern Western movies like nothing else. Argh!

One last, minor disappointment is with how damn similar this game plays (mechanically speaking) to any other GTA inspired open world game. Sure, you’re on a horse in the plains instead of on a Faggio in Liberty City, but damn! Part of me would actually much rather this game have been a much shorter, more focused experience that took chances with some different mechanics. It would have probably lost something in that, sure, but the déjà vu I felt while racing from point A to point B while trying to shoot all of the red dots on my mini-map certainly detracted from the experience if only a little.

Finally, I know it’s been spoiled a million times over now but I’ll still avoid mentioning specifics: I thought the unconventional structure of the ending was quite interesting. The game continues on after it would seem like a typical place for it to have concluded and does so more than once! Not in a “ha ha, got you!” kind of way, it’s actually fairly consistent with the rest of tone of the game. I’ve yet to really decide whether this was a good thing or not (I can’t stand playing a game when it feels like it’s worn out its welcome and false endings definitely don’t help) but it is fun to think about in any case.

Anyway, overall the experience was awesome. Not perfect by a long shot, but unique and worthwhile all the same. I regret not jumping into the game when it launched so I could experience the fun looking multiplayer a little but that is a common downside to clearing out one’s backlog, I suppose. Next up I’ll be playing through the expansion pack, Undead Nightmare, but first I think I need to watch another episode of Deadwood

Ground Up… date?

So, my switch to another server and to the Alliance has gone fairly well. The guild I found and eventually joined up with seems like a great bunch of people. The only downside (besides being Alliance scum) is that while they’ve got a semi-active forums and in game chat, almost no one in the guild uses voice communication outside of special events. Bummer! That said, I’ve had a good time adjusting to my new, much more active and interesting server and faction. As far as how I’ve spent my time, it’s been mostly accomplishing a few personal goals that I wanted to achieve:

First of all, I immediately set out to finish grinding Tol’vir Archaeology sites and finally crafted my own Vial of the Sands. Awesome mount, probably worth the trouble, or at least the price tag to buy one pre-made off of the auction house. I went after a few other mounts as well. Trying to solo Sartharion in the Obsidian Sanctum 10 man proved close to impossible with my previous PVP gear. I did at least use that as a good opportunity to assess my rotation and get real deep into improving my damage output and (especially) mitigation. Still, I put that one on the shelf for a while. Actually, speaking of my gear I didn’t have a great time of it in actual PVP either for that matter. With that said, that was next one my list.

I dove back into the honor grind in a hardcore way with the goal of completing a full set of updated PVP gear which includes learning all about the dailies in the Isle of Thunder and then kept going until I had enough Conquest earned to upgrade to Conquest level weapons and a few other items. That took a while, but I was able to use the excess honor on heirloom gear to supply to my alts. The primary alt I wanted to start leveling was a PVP Holy Paladin. I had a Tauren Holy Paladin that I almost exclusively PVPed with on my old server and besides generally scratching my healing itch, it was a surprising amount of fun. Unfortunately, for some reason, despite all of my uber heirloom gear, my new PVP paladin seems largely ineffective. I still occasionally have rare moments where I’ll be able to slip into a groove and provide some damn effective healing but most of the time I either get focused on and taken down almost immediately or my heals just don’t seem effective enough and I find myself the last man standing until I again become the target and die far too quickly. Either something seriously bad has happened to lower level Holy Paladins in the last few big patches or it’s just a case of everyone’s alts having even more heirloom gear than mine does. Ugh!

Once I had my new PVP gear and a lot more practice at playing my class I took Sartharion down in no time and got my black drake mount. I haven’t bothered trying to go after the twilight drake yet (solo the 25 man version, for the record) as I’m sure that would be fruitless. I also FINALLY, after all of these years, purchased every last one of the PVP mounts. Woot! After that I took a brief break from my tireless honor grinding and did a tiny bit more Archaeology grinding so that I found finally have a full “Professor” title.

Another thing I had on my checklist was to update my transmogrification look. I had been rocking a set of the Mists of Pandaria quest leathers for a long time because I liked their look on my Orc. It looked just as good on my dwarf but when they added the level 90 character boost an identical looking armor set seems to be the default armor for rogues meaning there are tons of clones running around now. Not only people wearing the same outfit as I am, but ones who are generally pretty bad at playing their classes correctly in dungeons and battlegrounds and the like. Not cool! I ended up finding some awesome war hammers on the auction house and dusting off a nice old set of previous season PVP gear.

Next I had hoped to max out my Fishing and Cooking skills but after the last couple of months of playing hardcore again I’m already feeling the burnout creeping in. Am I still compelled to play? You bet. The problem is that my gaming time is so limited at the moment that devoting ANY of it to a regular MMO addiction means that I’m not playing much else and I have a growing Xbox 360 and PC game backlog I really want to dive back into. So, it’s back on the shelf for my WoW account for a while. I may play my alts occasionally, as leveling in the Alliance zones is still pretty fun for me, but other than that I don’t think I’ll be back full-time until the release of Warlords of Draenor in the fall.

Forecast: Blizzard

For some indescribable reason I decided to further my vacation from my consoles for a while longer and dove headfirst into Diablo 3, mostly due to all of the hype surrounding the new 2.0 patch and the (then) upcoming Reaper of Souls expansion pack. First: good news, everyone! My concern in Lightsabers and Labyrinths was unfounded and Diablo 3 does in fact hold up quite well in the atmosphere department. The setting still feels very much like the grim world of Sanctuary from Diablo and Diablo 2 and even then some and the music is still great and perfectly atmospheric. The graphics, while a tiny bit cartoony compared to the previous games, actually feel ike a perfectly logical evolution of the previous style and overall look great. I had other concerns too such as hearing that they packed in much more backstory and dialog (including from your character!) than in previous games. I was somehow picturing a bunch of cheesy in-game cutscenes which would probably change the feel of the game quite a bit. Instead most of the dialog is delivered using something akin to ye olde “audio logs” and the follower interaction and plot related cutscenes that are there are mostly delivered in fairly unobtrusive ways too.

Gameplay wise, I rolled a Barbarian and played through on normal difficulty – Barbarians being one of the simplest yet funnest classes from Diablo 2 I figured it would be a good starter character to try out and I was definitely right. If anything I could have stood to bump up the difficulty a bit. I feel like it bears stating that yes, this playthrough took place entirely AFTER the 2.0 patch which included a lot of the refinements of the earlier console ports of Diablo 3 including the apparently greatly improved loot system so I have no first hand account of how things used to be. All I can say is that what is there now works quite. I felt like loot drops were aplenty and upgrades came fairly often, at least in the first few acts of my adventure. Perhaps some of the best praise I can give Diablo 3 is that despite just playing through all of Torchlight and the last act or so of Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction, I not only managed to avoid getting burnt-out on the simple and repetitive ARPG gameplay but even somehow wound up totally addicted like I was playing Diablo 2 back in 2000 all over again.

I might as well mention the expansion since I bought it and played it inline with the original campaign and it’s still somewhat new on the shelves as of this update: it’s largely more of the same. The new zones, monsters, and events are awesome, the story, journals, items, and powers fit perfectly in with the core game, etc. etc. Really, the bulk of the biggest changes in the game outside of new content were those patched in (to everyone, expansion or not) with patch 2.0. The other big change is “adventure mode” which I’ve only briefly dabbled in so far. Regardless, it certainly seems like a better way to grind out levels and new gear than playing through the campaign for the 30th time. I think my only real surprise with Reaper of Souls is that it’s not just a straight continuation of the plot like they did with Diablo 2’s Lord of Destruction expansion. Instead it’s a new story entirely. That is, while continuing where the plot of the core game left off, it’s not just “and then a bigger, more badass demon showed up and you had to kill him too!” kind of thing. The only problem with this is that the stakes will always have to be extraordinarily high given your character’s story and the fact that you already managed to save the world from total annihilation in utterly epic fashion the first time around. Hey, if they can keep that expansion cycle up more power to them!

Overall I found Diablo 3 a total fucking joy to play through – capturing what I loved about Diablo and Diablo 2, refining some of those systems, and giving a slightly deeper look at the world of Sanctuary and its lore. Sure, the story arch feels a bit of a rehash of Diablo 2 in some ways and the game is still a simple blend of remorseless clicking and inventory management, but Diablo 3 delivers exactly what caused me to be captivated by the genre in the first place and does it with the usual top notch Blizzard polish. I’ll definitely be heading back through the campaign with another class against at some point in the future, probably multiple points even. I’m ecstatic.

Blizzard also updated their… err, updater? Okay, their “launcher” recently to serve as a single launch (gah, I did it again!) point for all of their newer Battle.net games and on that list is there new free-to-play collectible trading card game “Hearthstone”. Hearthstone plays like a simplified version of the old WoW TCG which itself was highly inspired by Magic: The Gathering and its ilk. I’ve heard great things about Hearthstone from friends and on some of the podcasts I subscribe to and, being the sucker that I am for mounts in World of Warcraft, seeing the little advertisement for a special mount for trying Hearthstone out was all the extra push I needed to give it a whirl. A whirl turned into a couple of whirls and then more whirls and now hours and hours of whirls. Man, this game is fun!

I’ve never been a TCG/CCG guy – I tried Magic out when it first hit in the 90s but it just always felt slightly too complicated to me for what it was trying to do. I also had a love/hate relationship with the whole collectibility part of it. Hearthstone, by streamlining the rules so much, really nullifies most of those complaints. The game is really fast and really easy to pick up on. Sure, there is still a “he with the most cash wins” aspect to it but I feel like the streamlining means that even the most rare (err, “epic”) cards aren’t too crazily overpowered. That, and Blizzard has the free-to-play mechanic fairly fine tuned so far so that you can pretty consistently unlock new cards without ever dropping a dime of real money. Add that addictive gameplay to some Warcraft aesthetics and some good old Blizzard polish and man, this game is rad! Given the repetitive nature of something like this I doubt I’ll play it too much more besides trying to master a coupe of more “classes” but so far I’ve really enjoyed my time with it.

As an aside, yes I know I probably shouldn’t care too much about World of Warcraft mounts given that I don’t actually play World of Warcraft anymore but… *sigh* once an addict, always an addict! I loaded up my level 50 something goblin hunter the other day and played through a whole zone and actually enjoyed myself once again. I suppose I’m getting hyped back up for the new Warlords of Draenor expansion coming later this year. I truthfully barely have enough energy for the game left in me to remain interested enough to buy this expansion. I almost didn’t buy Mists of Pandaria as it was back then. The new character models and the free level up to 90, as shallow as those offerings are, help sway me. The bigger thing is probably just having to personally come to terms with what I get out of the series nowadays – a few months of hardcore addiction before I put it back on the shelf until the next expansion, and honestly that’s totally fine with me.
